PRODUCTS CARE & CLEANING

Long-lasting cleanliness, minimal effort.

The Drape Store®® blinds are crafted from dust-resistant materials that help prevent dirt and dust build-up. With occasional upkeep, your blinds will continue to look fresh and clean.

Ongoing Maintenance

Light Dusting
In most situations, a gentle dusting with a feather duster is all that’s needed to keep blinds tidy.

Vacuuming
For more thorough cleaning, use a hand-held vacuum on a low setting with a soft brush attachment to remove dust more effectively.

Spot Cleaning Instructions

  1. Mix a mild detergent with warm water.
  2. Moisten a clean cloth in the solution and wring it out.
  3. Gently blot the affected area—avoid rubbing, which may damage the fabric.
  4. Let the blind dry fully in the down position.

CURTAIN CARE & MAINTENANCE

Caring for your curtains to extend their beauty and lifespan.

The design and fabric of your curtains impact how they should be cleaned and maintained. Follow these tips to preserve their quality and appearance.

General Guidelines

  • Allow for up to 3% natural movement (shrinkage or stretching) in the fabric after installation. This adjustment occurs as the fabric settles into its environment. Wait approximately 3 months before making any alterations.
  • Exposure to direct sunlight can lead to fading or fabric deterioration. We recommend pairing your curtains with an interior blind like Honeycomb Shades or Roller Blinds for added UV protection.
  • Avoid manually pulling or handling the curtain fabric, as this can lead to staining or damage. Always use the proper control mechanisms for operation.

Cleaning Instructions

Professional Dry Cleaning

  • Annual dry cleaning by a curtain care specialist (preferably a member of the WCAA) is recommended to minimise shrinkage and maintain fabric integrity.

Dusting & Light Vacuuming

  • Regular dusting reduces the build-up of particles in folds and pleats. Use a vacuum cleaner with low suction and a soft brush attachment to keep your curtains fresh.

Washing Guidelines

  • Dry cleaning is the preferred method, especially for lined curtains. Only hand-wash unlined curtains if absolutely necessary.
  • Hand-wash in cold or lukewarm water (max 40°C) using a gentle detergent suited to the fabric type.
  • Do not bleach, soak, wring or rub.
  • Never use a washing machine or tumble dryer.
  • Let curtains drip dry in a shaded area with the fabric’s inner face facing down. For best results, re-hang immediately to avoid creases. Avoid pegs and clotheslines.
  • Coated fabrics should only be spot cleaned, not immersed in water.
  • If ironing is needed, use a warm iron only on the fabric’s uncoated side. Always follow temperature guidelines (e.g., max 120°C for sheers). A pressing cloth is recommended when needed.
  • A fabric steamer can be used to smooth out wrinkles—avoid holding it too long on one spot.

Spot Treatment

  • Address spills or marks quickly.
  • Always pre-test any cleaner on a hidden area.
  • Gently scrape or blot the affected spot—do not rub.
  • Use cleaning agents as directed and avoid over-wetting the fabric.

Special Care for Velvet Curtains

  • Velvet requires delicate handling. Do not brush or vacuum the backing roughly, as it may distort the pile.
  • Always use control devices, not your hands, to open or close velvet curtains.
  • Dry clean only, and use a steamer to remove creases gently if needed.

OUTDOOR PRODUCT CARE & MAINTENANCE

Prolong the life and appearance of your outdoor blinds and awnings.

Outdoor fabrics are designed for durability, but proper maintenance is essential to keep them performing their best.

General Outdoor Care Tips

  • Always turn off power to motorised awnings before cleaning.
  • Do not retract awnings when wet. If rolled up during rain, unroll and allow to air dry as soon as possible to prevent mildew or algae growth.
  • Prevent water pooling, which may encourage chemical leaching and fungal growth.
  • Keep fabric clear of dust, leaves, bird droppings, and other debris to avoid staining and bacterial growth.

Cleaning Recommendations

  • Lightly sponge fabric with warm water and a mild natural soap. Rinse thoroughly to avoid soap residue.
  • Do not scrub or use strong detergents, bleach, or cleaning chemicals.
  • Rinse occasionally with a hose on warm days to keep dust and mildew at bay.
  • Keep insect sprays, fuels, and solvents away from all outdoor materials.

Handling Mildew

  • If mildew appears, treat with a suitable cleaner from outdoor/camping stores (usually bleach-based).
    1. Fully extend the awning before applying the solution.
    2. Use a sponge mop to apply generously. Protect surrounding plants and surfaces from runoff.
    3. A second application may be required. Some stubborn stains may remain.
    4. Always follow mildew treatment with a waterproofing spray.

Canvas-Specific Notes

  • Canvas includes natural cotton, so occasional shrinkage is expected in hot, humid climates.
  • Canvas is pre-treated for resistance to mildew and mould—however, proper care is essential.
  • Coastal areas with high salt levels require more frequent rinsing. Salt corrosion is not covered by warranty, so proactive maintenance is critical.
